Scores across multiple shifts are normalised using a published formula available on the JSSC website.
Stage 1 – Preliminary Examination
The Preliminary Exam is a single paper of 120 multiple-choice questions (3 marks each) with a duration of 2 hours. There is negative marking of 1 mark for each wrong answer. The paper consists of:

|---|---|
| General Studies | 30 |
| Knowledge Related to Jharkhand State | 60 |
| General Mathematics | 10 |
| General Science | 10 |

| Total | 120 |
Minimum qualifying marks in the Preliminary Exam:
| Category | Minimum Qualifying Percentage |
|---|---|
| Unreserved / EWS | 40% |

| Extremely Backward Class (Schedule-I) | 34% |
| Backwards Class (Schedule-II) | 36.5% |
| Primitive Tribe (Aadim Janjati) | 30% |
Candidates who qualify the Preliminary Exam are shortlisted for the Main Exam in a ratio of 15 times the number of vacancies (category-wise).
Stage 2 – Main Examination
The Main Exam consists of three papers, each of 2 hours’ duration, with 3 marks per correct answer and 1 mark deducted for each wrong answer:
Paper 1 – Language Knowledge (Qualifying)
| Section | Questions |
|---|---|
| Hindi Language (Passage + Grammar) | 60 |
| English Language (Passage + Grammar) | 60 |
| Total | 120 |
Minimum qualifying marks: 30%. Marks from Paper 1 are not counted towards the merit list.
Paper 2 – Regional/Tribal Language Knowledge
Candidates choose one language from: Hindi, English, Urdu, Santhali, Bengali, Mundari (Munda), Ho, Kharia, Kudukh (Oraon), Kurmali, Khortha, Nagpuri, Panchpargania, Odia, Sanskrit. This paper has 100 multiple-choice questions. Minimum qualifying marks: 30%.

| General Science | 20 |

| Mental Ability Test | 10 |

Final merit is determined by combining marks from Paper 2 and Paper 3 (candidates must score a minimum of 30% in each). The merit list is common, and final post allotment is done based on merit-cum-preference.
Tie-breaking rule: Equal marks → older candidate ranked higher → equal age → alphabetical order of name as entered in the application (in English).
